THIRSTY CROW

Janet Crawford Thirsty Crow

June–September 2021

19.5″ high x 13.5” long; stone is 8″ thick (crow is 5.5″ thick).
49.5 cm high x 34.5 cm long; stone is 20.5 cm thick (crow is 14 cm thick)

A 3D sculpture using glued sections of high- density foam and then carved into the shape of the crow. This was then covered in a layer of metal screening and a thin coat of exterior Mapei mortar. Vitreous glass tiles were then cemented onto the shape and then grouted and finally sealed.

Small cut black beads were used for eyes. The beak was shaped with cement and painted with acrylic paint.

The crow was attached to a large, moss-covered beach stone by drilling two holes to anchor the legs of the crow. From these ‘spike’ legs the toes were created by using electrical copper wire then painted. Abalone shells were attached to the mouth of the crow and at the feet of the crow.

Private collection.
