During my residency at Fort Beauséjour I asked the National Park Director if I could have some authentic artifacts to incorporate into a mosaic work. She generously gave me a few pieces including some handmade ‘square headed’ nails and some pottery shards and shells that were excavated around the Fort. These pieces would date back to the 1750s.

From these works I played around with various compositions to honour both the Fort’s history and the opportunity to work here for a short while.

The substrate was coated with a tinted (the colour of the Bay of Fundy) cement as a base. Vitreous glass tiles were used as a border. The artifacts were glued on to the base. This finished work was given to the Director, Juliette, as a thank you for her enthusiasm and assistance.
