Foundry Town by Ray Legere and Janet Crawford

The 150th anniversary of the establishment of Sackville’s Enterprise Foundry, as well as the 170th anniversary of Fawcett Foundry, was celebrated in 2022. Foundries were an integral part of the Town of Sackville’s growth in the mid to late 1800s, and well into the 20th century. The lives of many of Sackville’s residents were touched by these foundries and foundry work. The Enterprise-Fawcett Foundry shut down operations in 2012 following fire.

This CD is dedicated to the generations of Sackville and area residents who gave their working lives to the Foundries. These songs honour all working people.

Song List

Small Town Foundry Blues (4:55)

(Janet Crawford, Ray Legere, 2022)

It’s been a long hard week
Down at the foundry.
It’s been a long hard week
Down at the Foundry
Bills all been paid – nothing’s left for me.

I’ve paid my dues
There’s nothin left to lose
I’ve got the small town
Foundry blues.

The boss man yelled
Buddy you move too slow
Oh the Boss man yelled
Man you move too slow
I hung my head – I never felt so low.

My head’s in pain
My back is bent and sore
Oh my heads full of pain
My back is bent and sore
When this shift ends – I don’t wanna come back no more.

I’ve paid my dues
Nothin left to lose
I’ve got the small town
Foundry blues.

My pa worked here
My grandpa worked here too
My ma worked here
My grandma worked here too
What on earth is a poor soul suppose to do

Can’t find a job
There’s nothin left to do
I’m stuck at this job
there’s nothin else to do
My heart is down with the small town Foundry blues

Cause – I’ve paid my dues
I got  nothin left to lose
I got the small town
Foundry blues

I’ve paid my dues
I got nothin left to lose
I got the small town Foundry Blues
I got the small town Foundry Blues

Stumble and Fall (3:53)

(Janet Crawford, Ray Legere, 2022)

When you trip up and you stumble  makes you pause – makes you humble
are you ever gonna  make it through
love your family, hold your babies, try and navigate the maybes
in the world that seldom ever holds true

When the path of life is sticky sometimes it gets so tricky
its hard to find the road that lies ahead
when the job takes all your heart and leaves you just a spark
let go of every word they ever said

Cause you know with tomorrow there’ll always be some sorrow
it’s all about the window and the door
Oh you lean upon your hope even though you barely cope
don’t leave your soul awhimperin’ on the shop floor

Don’t lose the life you’re given – while you’re trying to make a living
It’s hard to find the pieces once they fall
It’s a job so make your way  find yourself on Saturday
Count your blessings cause they’re standing tall

Life is good – reach out and take it.  Try and find the heart to make it
the good is waiting there for you to hold
Give your all and take the win  after all it’s not a sin
Grab the day and race toward the goal

Cause you know with tomorrow there’ll always be some sorrow
it’s all about the window and the door
Oh you lean upon your hope even though you barely cope
don’t leave your soul awhimperin on the shop floor

Cause you know with tomorrow there’ll always be some sorrow
it’s all about the window and the door
Oh you lean upon your hope even though you barely cope
don’t leave your soul awhimperin on the shop floor

Don’t leave your soul awhimperin on the shop floor.

Foundry Town (4:06)

(Janet Crawford, Ray Legere. 2022)

What brought the world to this place
A hundred and fifty years ago
fortunes played – stars aligned
Each day that ol whistle would blow

The risks were high – the work was hard
Sand killed them in their prime
Cast the iron for the stoves
Or worked the assembly lines

Even though shops are all gone now
ol’ shift whistle does not sound
the mem’ry of their work was cast
By the people here in Foundry Town

Friday nights were always bright
Folks all out to buy their wares
Pockets full of piece work pay
Oh hhh – no more cares

Shops are all gone now
the ol’ shift whistle does not sound
memory of their work is cast
By the people here in Foundry Town

They laid their souls on the line
Hopes and dreams drift up and down
That name is heard round the world
On the stoves made in Foundry Town

Thou the shops are all gone now
the ol’ shift whistle does not sound
the mem’ry of their work is cast
In the people here in Foundry Town
We’re the people in this Foundry Town

River of Iron (5:03)

(Janet Crawford, Ray Legere, 2022)

The sun is new – the day begins
his wife and children dream away
Into the  light – bright and clear
in hope of a better day

The whistle blows – it wakes the town
the men to earn their dime
lunch pails full of dreams
Foundry men mark their time

Dance on the sand all the day
til the river of iron runs red
Sweat and toil will earn your pay
keep your family fed
keep your family fed

You’re king of the floor – top of the heap
a master of your trade
gather and laugh at the ol’ half wall
with men who will never fade

End of day the iron pours our
In your hands you carry your life
wait for the day to watch your kids plays
spend  some time with your wife

Dance on the sand all the day
til the river of iron runs red
Sweat and toil will earn your pay
Keep your family fed
Keep your family fed

Dreams fade like smoke in the wind
and your hand feels it slip away
red like fire – blood in your veins
day after day after day

then it slips away
then it slips away
and the moon rises again
then it slips away
then it slips away
day after day after day…

Try to Find Our Way (3:22)

(Janet Crawford, Ray Legere, 2022)

We all set out to make our mark
a mark in time – a place defined
we parse out moments from our lives
and try to find our way

Oh the piano man is full of grace
with fingers that can touch your heart
can those hands be tough as nails
when his family starts to fall apart

Hold on to every spark
tell our arrow where to aim
our life and work will shape our hearts
and purpose drives us all the same

Oh the nurse can read your vital signs
calm you when you’re deep in fear
but who can sing when night descends
to comfort her and hold her near

Days go on – our place of work
is often here within our soul
and stories often seem to blur
of days when life and work are told

We all set out to make our mark
a mark in time – a place defined
we parse out moments from our lives
and try to find our way
We’re just trying to find our way

Assembly Line Waltz (5:11)

(Ray Legere, 2022)
Instrumental

So Long (5:16)

(Janet Crawford, Ray Legere, 2022)

I didn’t see this coming
the smell of honest work a memory
what moved sooo  slow oooo
now speeds and fades into the air

All those days – all that was fine
gathers like dust
layered on the shelf of time
So long … so long … hmmmm so long

Does yearning fade with time ?
do years dull down all the fire?
courage has all slipped away
as quiet and softly as the tide

All those days – all that was fine
gathers like dust
layered on the shelf of time
So long … so long … hmmm   so long

We’re closin’ down the show now
the song of quiet nights a memory
The tune that was so sweet and clear
Settles soft on the gentle evening air

All those days – all that was fine
gathers like dust
layered on the shelf of time
So long … so long …  hmmmmmm  so long

Shift Work (3:31)

(Janet Crawford, Ray Legere, 2022)

Sleep never comes or else it never goes
Shift work keeps me feeling  so low
Is it day or is it night, one thing’s for sure
The shift boss always asks for more.

Why this world can never sleep
is always jobs like these
the days they come and nights they go
and when change comes it comes too slow

Sleep never comes or else it never goes
Shift work keeps me feeling low
Is it day or is it night, one thing’s for sure
Shift boss always asks for more.

Its hard to plan your life in place
Hard for your family
To find the time to share it all
Work goes on relentlessly

Sleep never comes or else it never goes
Shift work keeps me feeling low
Is it day or is it night, one thing’s for sure
The shift boss always asks for more.

Shifts start and then they end
and then they start all over again
the never ending shift of life
days fade – dark to light

Sleep never comes or else it never goes
This Shift work keeps me feeling so low
It’s hard to tell the day – it’s hard to tell the night
One things for sure – it’s never right

Sleep never comes or else it never goes
This Shift work keeps me feeling so low
Its hard to tell the day – it’s hard to tell the night
One things for sure – it’s never right
Oh One things for sure – it’s never right

Enterprise Heat (2:46)

(Janet Crawford, Ray Legere, 2022)

There’s a little town on the Bay of Fundy
Where my family all were born
When I’m home from work on Sunday
Hang around the ol’ cook stove all morn

When the snow falls all around us
When the night goes on and on
We will all be cozy near the fire
Safe and sound and warm

Cook a little bacon, eggs and taties
boil up the tea so nice and strong
Throwin in the wood to feed the fire
Keep the stove hummin’ all day long

Doesn’t matter what the weather
Doesn’t matter what the time
We’ll keep our feet warm in the oven
Enterprise heat is oh so fine.

There’s a little town on the Bay of Fundy
Where my family all were born
When I’m home from work on Sunday
Hang around the ol cook stove all morn

As the days all go together
And the years all fade with time
keep out feet warm in the oven
Enterprise heat is oh so fine
Enterprise heat is oh so fine
Enterprise heat is oh so fine.

You’re on the Road (4:22)

(Janet Crawford, Ray Legere, 2022)

You’re on that road – hold your head high
You’re on the road – I’m on your side
You’re on the road – against the tide
You’re on the road – I’ll be your guide

Heaven knows we work so hard
Hell knows how it feels
The whole wide world is in a mess
The devil makes the deal
The Devil makes the deal

Your father’s back is bent with years
Your mother’s heart is worn
Your children look for solitude
Amid the noise and scorn
Amid the noise and scorn

You’re on that road – hold your head high
You’re on the road – I’m on your side
You’re on the road – against the tide
You’re on the road – I’ll be your guide

The work day never seems to end
The weekends seem to fly
Sleeps comes slowly in the dark
with truths and alibies
Truths and alibies

The foundry floor is soiled with age
the men who’ve gone before
The echo of their voice sing
of sweat and blood and toil.
of sweat and blood and toil.

You’re on that road – hold your head high
You’re on the road – I’m on your side
You’re on the road – against the tide
You’re on the road – I’ll be your guide
